Karl A. Duffek was born on 12 March 1962 in Vienna. He studied German philology and English and political and social sciences at the Universities of Vienna and Hagen and was employed at the Association of Socialist Students of Austria (VSStÖ). As from 1988, he was research associate at the Karl-Renner-Institute and became Deputy Director in 1992, before he was appointed Director in 1999. From 1998 to 2001, he also acted as Education Secretary and since 2010 as International Secretary of the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ). Since the establishment of the Foundation for European Progressive Studies (FEPS) in 2008, he held the office of Treasurer and Vice-President. In the ITH Karl A. Duffek was member of the International Scientific Committee during many years. On 7 August 2016, Karl A. Duffek died at the age of 54 after short and serious illness.
